Murky, And Madoff
I’ve been trying, with little success, to do some sort of wrap up on the economic front. I think at this point it may wait until Christmas, when the full horror of retail comes to bear, but in the meantime, let me weigh in a little on Bernard Madoff. The Madoff story is, I think, yet another economic turning point: for all the losses in stocks and all the drama in banks, up until this scandal broke, “Millionaires lose fortunes in stock crash” seemed more theoretical than real (although, with j

Chicago Defender Blues Advertisements: Christmas Sermons
Will The Coffin Be Your Santa Claus? (MP3) As we creep closer to Christmas we turn our attention to a pair of uplifting Christmas sermons advertised in the December 17th, 1927 edition of the Chicago Defender: Rev. J.M. Gates’ “Will The Coffin Be Your Santa Claus?” and Rev. A.W. Nix’s “Death May Be Your Christmas Present.” The idea of Christmas themed blues and gospel numbers stretches back to the very dawn of the recorded genres. “Hooray for Christmas” exclaims Bessie Smith to kick
Brunswick’s Most Important Client: Brunswick
You know the old saw about the lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client, right? During the credit boom, the financial PR business grew at an astounding rate as deals–friendly and hostile–drove the news cycle. Brunswick, originally a UK firm, broke into the business by hiring the Wall Street Journal’s star M&A reporter Steve Lipin, the Andrew Ross Sorkin of his day. Since then, Brunswick has opened offices around the country–they just hired the Huffington Post’s Hillary Rosen in

Motley Fool Says Netflix is “Best Stock for 2009″
Rick Aristotle Munarriz on The Motley Fool says Netflix is the Best Stock for 2009. The cost for the service is certainly reasonable, with the average customer paying just $13.60 a month. It may not be the cheapest entertainment subscription service out there — Sirius XM Radio is slightly cheaper — however, for less than a pair of tickets at the local multiplex, Netflix subscribers enjoy a smorgasbord of DVD rentals and Web-based streams. Now that most major networks are streaming their shows
A DIY Computer Sound Card – With Tubes
A year and a half ago, I built my own USB soundcard, combining a do-it-yourself USB DAC and a simple headphone amplifier. Quite aside from the performance – which was very good – the whole project had a pretty awesome retro appeal, at least to me: there isn’t a lot of hardware the average person can build that interfaces with a modern computer, and the whole process is a throwback to the days of Apple IIs and Ataris. Besides, it has great nerd-snob-appeal: Oooh, you modded your PC case with a w

Curried Parsnip & Honeyed Shallot Couscous
When you are in an online relationship with someone, can you call it dating? Do telephone conversations count? Or is it only correct when you meet in person for the first time? Anyway, details aside, the first time I ate my first parsnip was on the fateful day Neil and I met face to face. Needless to say I was exhausted after a back-to-back flight from Johannesburg to London, via Dubai, which more or less amounts to 24 hours of travelling if you include car trips as well. (more…)
