A coffee with lunch is best for diabetes

Posted by 12 March, 2010 (0) Comment

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Drinking coffee reduces the risk of developing diabetes, but only if it is included at lunch, according to new research.

A study of nearly 70,000 women found that women who drank at least a cup of coffee and lunch were a third less likely to develop type 2 diabetes for several years that non-drinkers.

This was applicable for both regular coffee and for decaffeinated and with or without sugar. But drink it at any time of day did not change the risk of diabetes.

“The results suggest that only coffee with lunch reduces the risk of diabetes,” he wrote in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Team Dr. Daniela S. Sartorelli, University of Sao Paulo in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil.

A dozen studies had linked coffee consumption with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, which is the variant associated with obesity.

But they know the mechanisms behind this relationship and any previous research had analyzed whether the changed time of consumption.

The researchers looked at 69,532 women participating in a study French in Europe who were between 41 and 72 years to join the investigation and who were followed for about 11 years.

In that period, 1415 developed type 2 diabetes. Those who drank at least three cups of coffee a day were 27 percent less likely to be diabetic.

But at the time of consumption analysis, the researchers found it only at lunch reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes. The group that drank more than one cup daily for lunch was 33 percent less likely to develop diabetes.

The “lunch effect” was found only with the black coffee with no coffee. But given the small number of participants who drank the combination at noon, the result is not too strong.

The benefits of drinking coffee at breakfast may be associated with time of day or the type of food eaten at noon, the team concluded.

Eight ways to pay less on your cell phone bill

Posted by 12 March, 2010 (0) Comment

When you hear stories about how the cost of things is not the same level of money earned by individuals, typically referred to the facts that the costs of healthcare are rising and college tuition are completely divorced from reality . And with good reason, of course. But it is also important to recognize that families are spending money on their budget items that were not part of the checkbooks of our parents.

Think about it: big and huge television contracts with services that are accompanied. Computers and Internet monthly service they require.

Y: cell phones.

In our house, we are about to change to a single supplier to provide us with all the services of TV / Internet / phone to save some money. But the fact is that what we are paying for our telephone service as a family is quite alarming. We still have a fixed telephone line, which, even when we have a pretty basic package, costing $ 60 a month with taxes and fees. And now that four members of our family of five have cell phones and we have a family plan cell phone with text messages, we are paying about $ 100 a month for that statement. All change.

So this fairly new spending for families deserve some attention to ensure he is not paying more than necessary. ShopSmart magazine Consumer Reports has provided some good tips to help us achieve just that, starting with the important work of analyzing your receipt, use and habits of calls and text messages so make sure you have the right plan for his family. Here are 8 tips ShopSmart:

1. Check your minutes. Study their cell phone bills over the past six months to see how many minutes you actually use and if you get some available each month. (Or, of course, if it exceeds the allotted minutes). As pointed out this story from the New York Times, unlimited calling plans may not be the best option for most families, even as major cellular providers like AT & T and Verizon have been reduced from $ 100 to $ 70 price your choice of unlimited calls per month. An analysis found that LLC Valid unlimited calling plans are profitable only for 7 percent of cellphone users. Most teenagers rarely make calls on their cell phones, at least to his friends prefer texting.

2. Make good use of your cellular phone family plan. If you have a family plan for multiple numbers, use it. Do not call your spouse or children using your landline. Use the cell because their calls are included in your monthly bill.

3. Use your gifts well. If your cellular phone company offers free minutes to designated phone numbers, record the numbers that mark more often but be sure to get the most out of this presentation savings by limiting his list to landlines and cell phone numbers outside your network.

4. Choose the right package for text messaging. Paying for individual text messages quickly becomes something ridiculously expensive, and if you have a teenager in his plan, probably not even want to think of a permissive approach. Unless their plan to block all text messages, discuss honestly their habits with text messages (and their families) to choose the appropriate amount (or unlimited package) so that no surprises when you receive your state account.

5. Talk on the phone. If you come to receive one of those receipts impressively high because their habits are not in sync with your payment plan, call your cell phone company to clarify the charges and insist on a discount for the receipt of that month, while changes to a plan that reflects the true habits of your family.

6. Consider a data plan. If you finish checking their email and surfing the Internet more than I expected, consider adding a data plan to your monthly bill so as not to incur costly charges of pay-per-use to increase your monthly data plan. Or, leave the navigation to the computer and only use your cell phone to make calls and send messages.

7. Discuss all opciones.Pase some time comparing the plans of the major cell phone companies on Internet sites. You can also use a service like billshrink.com for free, or pay for one as myvalidas.com (its base price is $ 5) for major review plans based on their usage and needs and view recommendations for phones and plans according to they.

8. Eliminate charges for termination of contract. Make an informed decision and to respect the term of your contract to avoid charges of up to $ 350 per telephone line if you change your company when your contract is still valid. A few months before it expires, it’s time for serious introspection and weigh your options, in order to find the best phone and service plan that fits your budget.

We have all watched in disbelief as our cell phone bill at some point. Do you how he has managed to reduce it to a manageable size that fits your needs and budget?

Posted by 9 March, 2010 (0) Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) – Many people who believe can not digest dairy products may have no objection if eating a small amount at a time, but little is known about the number of people who have true lactose intolerance, a government panel concluded .

Lactose is a sugar in milk and most babies are born producing enough enzyme lactase in the small intestine to digest it. But most people, most of lactase levels decrease throughout childhood. The level at which lower these levels determine whether a person can, for example, adult drinking two glasses of milk a row without pain, diarrhea, gas or bloating.

Mainly northern Europeans drink milk without difficulty after childhood, while other stocks with less cheese and milk in their diet lost that ability.

Regardless of their ancestry, the degree to which people can digest lactose is highly variable, and there is no accurate number of how many people experience symptoms that mean total lactose intolerance, said a panel of experts convened by the National Institute of Health.

“There are many gaps in knowledge”, said on Wednesday the head of the panel, Dr. Frederick Suchy, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Some studies indicate that people who think you have lactose intolerance, can actually digest the sugar, and the panel was concerned that people who avoid dairy products completely lose an important source of calcium and vitamin D, important nutrients for bone health and possibly other aspects.

The panel advises:

_search A medical diagnosis, since symptoms may be due to irritable bowel syndrome or another disorder rather than lactose intolerance.

_De Intolerance be diagnosed, studies suggest that some people can tolerate small amounts of dairy products, up a glass of milk, consumed with other foods. In addition, some products like low fat cheese have less lactose.

_Consumir Enough calcium or vitamin D from other sources such as fortified orange juice, lactose-free dairy products, broccoli is rich in calcium, soy products or supplements.

This conclusion seems to be very important because, often, the pictures accompanying the advent anxiety of chronic conditions like diabetes or heart failure although they are not given the same attention to clinical manifestations characteristic of these pathologies.

“We believe that physical activity may be a treatment-or at least a vital component of this-very affordable and can contribute much to the relief of symptoms and discomfort,” says lead researcher integrates the latest edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine, for which review of 40 trials which included 2914 people who had various medical conditions (heart disease but also cancer, arthritis and multiple sclerosis).

In 90% of the analyzed studies people were assigned to a daily exercise program (30-minute periods each day) reported fewer symptoms of anxiety suffer-pathology that is often accompanied or rather, become visible through the constant concern, the fear or nervousness that those who did not participate in any activity in particular.

“The benefit of exercise to improve mood of the people who must cope with a chronic disease is confirmed. Over the years as studies and experience have led us to assert that ‘move’ improves mood and increases the feeling of comfort and pleasure as a result of increased production and release of endorphins, “says Oscar Mendoza, a cardiologist and specialist in sports medicine member of the Cardiovascular Institute of Buenos Aires (ICBA).

“In turn, feeling well, the person gradually begins to increase its operational capacity, feels more useful, does not think so at what is happening and, clearly, reduces their anxiety level and can relate better to their environment. In conclusion, enhancing their quality of life, and that positive impact on their clinical condition, “the specialist. “In fact, we often see in the office that when a patient for any reason should discontinue the practice of a sport you like, feel angry, unstable, angry and irritable, and that same concern their families.”

Also consulted by the agency, the specialist in anxiety disorders, Bachelor Gabriela Martinez Castro, director of the Center for Specialized Studies on Anxiety Disorders (CEET) comments: “Certainly when a person engages in physical activity is switched off, relax. So obviously, this information is part of what is usually tells a patient that is experiencing a situation that breeds anxiety, especially when it is not permanent, but chronic, such as a disease. ”

However, Martinez Castro mentions two issues which need attention: “On one hand we must consider that the chosen activity will be pleasant for the patient, do it with pleasure, that the enjoyment and the other that is in agreement physical capacity and, above all, that relates to the particulars of the treating physician.

Meanwhile, at the time of providing details, Herring and his team said: “Although most patients had high anxiety score of the end to start the training exercise, it is clear that regular physical activity reduces remarkably the emotional state of worry and fear. More precisely, we estimate that we can speak of a reduction of 20%. ”

“Apart from medication and drug items, we are convinced that exercise not only has a definite influence on physical health but also on mental,” concluded the American specialists.

Regardless of the time, what counts is getting out to exercise. And never leave to care for meals and stay hydrated. If the training is during the day, prefer areas with trees, which are less susceptible to variations in climate, especially the heat.

What are the 10 biggest myths about nutrition?

Posted by 9 March, 2010 (0) Comment

What are the ten biggest myths that people hear and repeat on nutrition? The Wendy Repovich nutritionists and Janet Peterson, members of the American College of Sports Medicine, recently presented at the 11th Annual Conference on Health and Fitness organized by that entity. Then nutritional misconceptions to be cleared from the list.

1. That diabetes can be prevented by eating foods low glycemic.

There are high levels of glucose to blame for diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, which does not require daily insulin application: in fact the disease is caused by the body’s resistance to insulin. Sweet foods can cause considerable increases in blood glucose of the person (blood sugar), but that’s just an indicator of the presence of diabetes, not the root of the problem.

2. Eating immediately after exercise helps build muscles

Not true. Endurance athletes need to ingest carbohydrates immediately after exercise to replenish glycogen levels, and only a small amount of protein to emphasize that replenishment. That can be achieved by drinking a low-fat chocolate milk or a sports drink. At this point the protein will not help build muscle, so strength athletes do not need to run the table after training.

3. Irritable bowel sufferer should not eat fiber

It is partly true, because there are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble, the latter can hardly be a source of problems. Soluble fiber, however, are found in most legumes, the body absorbs more easily and can help people suffering from the syndrome to regulate their digestive cycles.

4. Those who eat large amounts of protein gain muscle mass

Unless a broker make a significant workout with weights, extra protein will have no effect. Even a higher nutrient requirement by the training can easily be substituted for food.

5. We all need to take vitamins

Fake. With a varied diet of fruits, vegetables and legumes comprehensive, and adequate amounts of lean protein, no supplement is necessary. Vitamins are recommended for pregnant women and people with nutritional disorders.

6. Drinking alcohol is harmful to health

With alcohol the key is moderation. Red wine, for instance, contains antioxidants beneficial to health.

7. Eating eggs raises cholesterol

The myth arose because the yolk has higher cholesterol than any other food. However, if there is moderation in consumption is not enough for health at risk. Studies suggest that one egg per day is half nutritious without actually raise cholesterol.

8. Brown breads are integral

Brown dyes and additives can give the mistaken appearance bakery. Read labels to certify.

9. You have to drink eight glasses of water per day

It is necessary to replace fluid lost each day through breathing and perspiration, but that does not imply that drinking two liters of water per day. It is difficult to determine the exact amount of water consumed in food or drinks during the day. An indicator is your urine: if your color is very OCUR, is a sign that you have to start drinking more water.

10. Carbohydrates are fattening

Removing carbohydrates from the diet can have an immediate benefit in reducing weight through fluid loss. But eating carbs in moderation does not cause weight gain, and instead generates energy. The body uses carbohydrates to function, and its lack can cause tiredness and lethargy.

Review of Oscar 2010 – the gallery morality

Posted by 9 March, 2010 (0) Comment

If not for the surprise emergence of the Argentine Juan Jose Campanella received an Oscar for best foreign film for The secret of his eyes, and expected even less reference to our country ( “A hug for the brothers of Chile”), the edition 82, the Oscars went straight to be forgotten the next day. Flat and dull, the awards ceremony at the Kodak Theater reiterated the traditional lack of risk and showed that the awards presenters, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, recruited for its alleged “humor” were prey to the excessive rigidity of the script and had the shadow of Hugh Jackman, the brilliant host of the 2009 edition.

It was clear beforehand that the supposed novelty of having ten films competing in the category of Best Film, was really a race between two: Avatar and Living on the edge. And as she was known to the Megafilm of James Cameron was not all him and the film set in Iraq came to the ceremony with the favoritism of the press and the progressive sectors of Hollywood.

Therefore, the logic of balance and trends of the previous weeks indicated that the dispute between the film by Cameron and Bigelow will be settled by delivering the address to the director of Living on the edge, and the Avatar film . Things worse, the Academy Awards Bafta could imitate the English, and charge the balance towards the war story. The old dichotomy between the message and entertainment this time had no major differences: a triumph of Avatar a rough submission meant more commercial cinema once again raising doubts about the lack of criteria for the Academy to any tapes repeatedly certified quality. Fortunately the lucidity prevailed, but was turning what would have happened if Hollywood rewarded the most emotional film, round and lovable of all postulating a movie of the year: Up

Given these circumstances, only had to sit and wait. They marched without any apprehension Up Academy Awards (best animated film, Pixar category that by now it was short), and all the acting awards (Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Mo’Nique and Christoph Waltz) without giving surprise some. Some were well deserved, as Bridges and Waltz, other oversized as Bullock, but adjusted to what was expected.

About the hosts, was also the question of what would have happened if they had not censured Sacha Baron Cohen. That healthy share of impudence and incorrectness as the author of Borat himself would have been able to largely despercudir the list of calculated jokes with the couple’s Martin / Baldwin tried unsuccessfully to expedite the ceremony. In the end, the condescension flooded every corner of the Kodak Theater with the unusual act of PR that made some figures with the nominees for best actor and actress, listing their personal and professional virtues as if to Red Cross volunteers.

In a year when Hollywood blockbusters like never dominated the cinemas of the world, and the wake of the Avatar seems to have redirected the goals of mass cinema, the Academy anointed a film with “message” as is Living on the edge, but not running major setbacks. Are known to reward the best or which shake is better to look elsewhere.

These deductions may decide to break down the costs of using their car either by joining all costs incurred in the year or approximate value these costs using the amount of miles driven for the purpose of the services provided (voluntary or business) during the year . In that amount of miles driven annually is applied to a standard determined by the cost of living, inflation and the amount accepted by the IRS. For example, in 2004 the amount per mile traveled was 37 ½ cents per mile for business expenses. In 2008, it was 50 ½ cents per mile of business travel expenses. If it’s miles to volunteer or charity services are calculated at 14 cents a mile traveled by the medical services of 19 cents.

25.Nonrefundable credits – nonrefundable credits: The tax credits can reduce the tax liability of the taxpayer. We must keep out smaller screens, according to a study

Posted by 6 March, 2010 (0) Comment

AUCKLAND (Reuters) – Parents who let their children watch too much TV or sit for hours in front of the computer were claimed by a study which suggested that excessive exposure to “screens” could cause problems with relationships.

The study, published in the journal Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, should comfort the parents who feel guilty about depriving their children of the entertainment of their peers are enjoying, according to lead author, Dr. Rose Richards, University Otago.

“Our findings provide some assurance that it is good to limit time spent watching television,” he said. “In fact, you can make relationships stronger among young people, their friends and their parents,” he said.

The work was based on the Study Multidisciplinary Health and Development, Dunedin and Lifestyle Survey of Youth, conducted by the university in the 1980s and later in 2004.

Although studies are distanced by 16 years and the nature of screen-based entertainment has changed, the link with family relations seems to be the same.

“In the eighties, there were not many choices, so people watched television, but now there are plenty of screens that young people can look for hours,” Richards told Reuters.

“We found that looking at any screen for a long time is harmful and encourage parents to comply with the recommended time limit of less than two hours use of screens a day,” he said.

The Lifestyle Survey of Youth to 3043 involving New Zealand adolescents aged 14 to 15 years. The students completed a confidential questionnaire about their leisure habits, and evaluating their relationship with parents and friends.

The researchers also analyzed responses from 976 members of the Dunedin Study, who were 15 years between 1987 and 1988.

“In both studies, we found that high exposure to television, or even a computer, was related to problems in relating to,” Richards said, adding that having strong relationships with parents and friends was important for a healthy transition adolescence to adulthood.

“With the rapid pace of developments in screen-based technologies, more research is needed to monitor the impact they are having on the social, psychological and physical development of young people,” he said.

Avoid an audit: 6 warning signs to be aware

Posted by 6 March, 2010 (0) Comment

If history is any indication, less than 1% of Americans will be audited by the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, for the next year. And while some of these audits are completely random and there is nothing that the individual taxpayer can do about it, many are in fact instigated by the same taxpayers.

To that end, below is a list of “warning signs” that can make your statement received special attention from the IRS. Pay special attention as to know the warning signs can keep out of trouble.

1. Calculate your donations too
The IRS encourages individuals to donate things like clothes, food and even old cars to charities. It does so by providing a deduction for the donation. However, the problem with this system is the responsibility of the taxpayer determine the value of the property being donated.

As a rule, the IRS likes to see that individuals who donate items valued somewhere between 1% and 30% of the original purchase price (unless there are special circumstances). Unfortunately, many, if not most, taxpayers or are not aware of it or simply choose to ignore this fact.

There are several additional tips you can use to ensure that a taxpayer is valuing the assets donated to a “fair” price. Addition of 30% and under the above rule, consider that an appraiser do a written assessment. (In fact, for individual items valued at $ 5,000 or more, requires a review). Another benchmark used by the IRS and could be useful is the test of buyer-willing-seller-willing.

This means that taxpayers must value their assets at a point, or price at which a willing seller (which is not being forced) to sell their property to a willing buyer (who is not being forced to buy the article). Using this reference point will not get into trouble and prevent you from over-valuing the old Frank Sinatra albums that belong to his dad.

2. Math Errors
While this may sound simple, many statements are selected for an audit due to errors in basic mathematics. So when you file your statement (or check your meter after you complete the form), make sure that the columns are well calculations. Also make sure that the total dollar value of gains and / or capital losses are properly calculated. Even a small error can cause suspicion.

3. Do not sign the statement
A large percentage of taxpayers forget to sign their tax returns. Is not part of that percentage! Do not sign the statement almost certainly guarantees will be subject to additional scrutiny. The IRS will wonder what else might have forgotten to include in the statement.

4. Report the actual income of less than
With all tempting it might be not to include their income on your tax return, it is vital that you report to the IRS all the money he has received during the year, either through their work and / or sale of an asset ( as a house). Failure to report all their income and get caught, is forced to pay back taxes and penalties and interest.

How can tell the IRS if you reported all your income? In some situations, it can not. After all, the system is not perfect. However, a common way in which some individuals are detected is accepting cash for a service performed. If the customer or individual who paid cash that individual is audited, the IRS will see a significant outlay of cash taken from your bank account. The IRS agent shall then follow this track and ask the individual that he uses cash. Inevitably, the court direct the person who has not reported the money as income.

In short, it is best to do things right from the start. Be sure to report all their income.

5. Deductions for work in an office at home
Be careful with deductions for home offices. The deductions are excessive or unjustified suspicion. Furthermore, the deductions that are large in proportion to their revenue may also incur the wrath of the IRS.

For example, if you earned $ 50,000 as an accountant (working from home) and deductions related to a home office totaling $ 30,000, that may raise some doubts. Try to include the value of a new set of furniture for the bedroom could also attract unwanted attention.

Deduct only items that were used for their work.

6. Income thresholds
There is nothing that the individual taxpayer can do about it, but if you make more than $ 100,000 a year, your chances of being audited increase exponentially. In fact, some accountants placed the odds of being chosen for an audit in one of every 72, compared with one in 154 for people with lower incomes.

OTHER SENSITIVE AREAS TAX

Risk society / trust / tax shelter
If you have an interest in a limited partnership is controlled by a trust or from some other tax haven investment is more likely to make an audit. Although there may be no way to avoid it, individuals with a stake in one of these entities should be aware that they are a target for the IRS. They must also have even greater care to document their deductions, donations and income.

Ownership of a small business
Several business owners are an easy target businesses-particularly those with cash payments. Bars, restaurants, car washes and beauty salons are exceptionally bright white, not only because they manage so much cash, but also because there is so much temptation to show less income and not to record tips received.

In summary, business owners must know that they can not “test the limits.” If they want to stay in business and avoid the scrutiny of an audit, it is best to take the most honest way.

So why give the impression that the IRS take increasingly stringent measures against individuals and small business owners recently? It’s simple. According to the IRS, there is a gap of about $ 300 billion dollars between what Americans say they pay taxes versus what they owe. That equates to nearly $ 2, 680 per household. Congress also knows that and in view of deficits that have accumulated U.S. government over the past 20 years, there is tremendous pressure on lawmakers and the IRS to collect all taxpayer funds.

Being audited
What should you do in the event of an audit? Be honest with the auditor and answer all questions as soon as possible. Do not be afraid to show all your documents. If possible, have an accountant and / or qualified tax attorney to represent you.

Ending Balance
Audits are, and remain, part of the tax collection process for a long time to come, but that does not mean you have to be one of the “lucky”. The key to avoiding an audit is to be honest and document their deductions, donations and income.

For abusing painkillers 3% of adults suffer from headache

Posted by 20 February, 2010 (0) Comment

In an effort to alleviate a condition that seems minor but it affects the quality of life, people who suffer from headaches often worsen their situation. Self-medication and excessive use of drugs can increase the intensity and frequency of episodes. In order to improve treatment of this disease is underway for an international investigation involving FLENI recognized medical institutions and the University as ISALUD, Buenos Aires.

The project objective is to try to prove that treatment for abuse of headache medication can improve the application of information technology and communications, said Maria Osa, Coordinator of the Residency in Hospital Administration from the University ISALUD.

The project is a research Comoestamos evaluated for 30 months, the effectiveness of a computerized system that enables continuous, personalized support for patients being treated for drug abuse headaches. An online program allows fluid communication between the patient and his doctor, so that the patient is deeply committed to the therapy and the specialist can monitor the progress of treatment.

What is the headache medication abuse

According to the World Health Organization, headaches abuse of medication (CAM) affect 3% of adults and 1% of children and adolescents. This condition is diagnosed when a person has had headaches for at least 15 days per month and in the last three months, took simple analgesics for at least 15 days per month or took drugs ergotamine, caffeine, triptans, opioids, or combinations of them for at least 10 days per month.

The CAM is often triggered in people with migraine or tension headache, which are two different types of headaches. Tension headaches are caused by contraction of the muscles of the head and neck against stress, whereas migraine is a syndrome in itself, an entity that changes with age, from patient to patient in the same person and from episode to episode. There are mild and other very severe migraines, some with a defined neurological compromise and others not, said Jorge Leston, specialist in neurology, Member of Comprehensive Pain Center FLENI.

Meanwhile, Maria Osa stressed that people who suffer from CAM have a headache problem so strong it prevents them from carrying out their work and family activities. Patients start to take painkillers to continue with their normal lives but abuse the medication and, therefore, the pain intensifies and becomes more frequent. That is, it has a primary and a secondary headache caused by the misuse of drugs, explained the specialist.

The search for relief

The treatment to cure the headache medication abuse begins with the stage of detoxification, which involves the complete cessation of the drugs that cause the problem. This period is very difficult because symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, anxiety and tachycardia, among others. For that reason, the physician must make a detailed monitoring of the patient and apply the appropriate therapy for each individual. Once this phase begins the treatment of primary headaches, which often includes the use of preventive medication.

Overcoming this problem is not simple, and in fact 45% of people slip back into drug abuse in only a few months. We must achieve to be in permanent contact with the patient and learn what is happening, as they are at risk of succumbing to addiction again and recover from a relapse costs much more. To accomplish that end we thought we could help the information technology and communication, Bear said.

The project Comoestamos

The program Comoestamos or continuous monitoring of Headache Medication Abuse in Europe and Latin America: development and standardization of an alert system to support decision making with funding from the Seventh Framework Program of the European Community. Participate in over 600 patients total of 6 specialized institutions in Argentina, Chile, Denmark, Spain and Italy.

The project developed an interactive electronic health records, which seeks to improve communication and ongoing monitoring of the patient. During the treatment the doctor has to go with the patient to go see what the outcome of drug therapy. Each individual is different and, moreover, an indication can be good for one person at a particular time but then may require a change. Comply with all this implies a permanent monitoring health systems are not able to give the usual organization they have, which is rather designed for acute episodes, Bear said.

The Interactive Electronic Health Record has several components. Have the information and medical history of each individual, which is enriched over time, and with an electronic diary of headaches, each patient was admitted to important information about your headaches, such as when it started, what I ate or drank that day and that drug use, among many others.

This tool allows doctors to do detailed monitoring of each patient and to identify possible adverse effects, contraindications or risks of a relapse. In turn, facilitates interconsultation when a professional seeking a second opinion.

Lestón said Comoestamos points to a better treatment monitoring system, an effective physician-patient communication, reducing costs and early intervention to prevent relapse in drug abuse.

Warnings on four medications for asthma in USA

Posted by 20 February, 2010 (0) Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) – In a measure to control the use of some asthma medications, used by millions of people, the government imposed restrictions on Thursday to reduce mortal danger caused by sudden attacks.

The warnings of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) include drugs Advair, Symbicort, Serevent and Foradil. The agency said they should be used only for asthmatics who can not control their condition with other drugs, and even then, only for the shortest time possible.

The FDA also said that any medications with LABAs should never be used without the simultaneous use of different medicine to control asthma, as an inhaled corticosteroid, a measure that specifically addressed two of those, Foradil, and Serevent.

Why? These four medicines contain the ingredient called beta agonist long-acting, or LABA relaxes muscles around airways affected. Although very useful for certain patients, how the drugs work with LABA sometimes not to reveal that intensifies inflammation in the airways. This may mean that patients are not aware of an impending asthma attack until they are barely able to breathe.

Advair and Serevent are marketed by the British firm GlaxoSmithKline, Foradil by Swiss company Novartis AG and AstraZeneca’s Symbicort by Anglo-Swedish.

The FDA cited studies that showed an increased risk of hospitalization and even some deaths, particularly among children. One study found three adverse events most hospitalizaciones_ _en per 1,000 patients taking a medication with LABA compared with other asthma medications, said Dr. Gerald Dal Pan, the FDA.

Physician guidelines recommend using a LABA together with an inhaled corticosteroid to relieve swelling. Advair and Symbicort combines both types of medicines in an inhaler. More than a year ago, the FDA’s scientific advisers had urged that more be used to treat heart medications only with LABA, Foradil, Serevent, and that none of the four drugs were used in children.
