The broad genetic diversity of the Hispanic and Latino populations with European ancestry, African Americans and Native Americans, has been the subject of a study conducted by several U.S. universities and also noted the impact that originate in some diseases.
“Being Latino in America may mean different things depending on site of origin of the ancestors,” says the study released today and that involved specialists from the universities of Cornell, New York, Arizona and Stanford (California) .

In preparing this study, scientists from these universities took genetic samples from 112 people of Mexico and another 100 in Ecuador, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

The analysis shows that the African ancestry dominate the Dominican, Puerto Ricans and Colombians, “reflecting the impact of African ancestry and migration which occurred on routes that were traditional in the slave trade.”

The researchers found that in some segments of the genome of Latin Americans, like Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, “are genetically more similar to that of the Nahua Indians of Mexico and Central America, while the South Americans (Colombians and Ecuadorians) are similar to those of the Quechua. ”

Thus, they add, there are several previous studies showing that most Latino ancestors of European descent, are more likely to develop breast cancer.
The study, which was funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH, for its acronym in English) from USA, also shows that when comparing the X chromosomes (female) and Y (male), and changes in DNA, “in their ancestors is a disproportionate contribution of European men and Native women in the current populations. ”
